In the Netherlands, the so-called “Four Days Marches” have been a tradition for over 100 years. In four days, the participants there complete between 30 and 50 kilometres of hiking per day and at the end they receive a medal for their performance. At the largest “Four Days Marches” event in Nijmegen, every year over 40,000 hikers take part, including 5,000 soldiers from all over the world. Some participants have taken part in the event over 50 times. Holland’s largest folk festival is organised around the event. Every year around 2 million people visit Nijmegen during the traditional hiking week. When the 7 km long caravan of hikers marches through the streets, it encounters musical entertainment, culinary treats and unbelievable crowds of all age groups along the way. In the evenings the town is transformed into a huge party centre comparable to the Donauinselfest in Vienna.
Supporting programme open to all guests as well as locals
The supporting programme (large marquee with live music daily, folk festival atmosphere along the hiking routes as well as evening events in the local restaurants, mountain lodges and bars) is intended to attract locals and guests who only take part in 1 – 2 hikes or who simply want to enjoy the atmosphere as visitors.
Organisation and sequence of hikes
The entire hiking programme is to be completed in 4 days:
Group 1: average of approx. 1,000 metres in altitude per day
Group 2: average of approx. 750 metres in altitude per day
Anyone who completes the entire programme, will receive a medal and a T-shirt as a souvenir at the end of the fourth day. Registration, start and finish will take place in the marquee at the Maibrunn car park (subject to construction approval).
The hikes will be accompanied and made secure by a team of trained hiking guides and Red Cross helpers.
